Thank you for your honest portrayal of coffee and the allure it has over some of us. I agree with everything you said and am grateful someone feels the same way. I often tell myself how lucky I am my addiction is coffee and sometimes sugar, rather than hard drugs. I know I need to let it go and sometimes do, but I usually come back. I may have sacrificed my thyroid gland because of my coffee addiction, but I will never know for sure. My chiropractor is trying to get my attention about what coffee does to me and I know the effects are bringing me down quickly. So, for me, the struggle continues. I pray for the strength to deal with it and let it go. I just wish decaf didn't raise my LDL readings or I would switch. I plan to transition to Holy Basil Tea. It is supposed to be super beneficial. Maybe we need to substitute the kick we get from coffee with a kick in the pants to give it up once and for all, except maybe the occasional Sunday morning. (Man, there I go again!)

Today is my fourth day of a caffeine free day. I feel SOOO much better. I can focus better (specially in those long work meetings), have a better control of my emotions and, strangely enough, i have more energy to finish my daily tasks. I still have a small amount of anxiety, and withdrawals here and there, but I will try my best to stay away from a caffeine.

I still need to figure out how to get enough energy for my early morning workouts...I do drink tons of water during the day. I will be more consistent about taking Vitamin B & C...Is there anything else that will give me that pick me up? How about the FRS products? Apparently it contains a small amount of caffeine that's used as a metabolic enhancer to help the body absorb some key ingredients in the formula. Any thoughts on this?

I just can't believe that I didn't my the switch earlier. My Colombian brothers will not be proud...LOL!

Hi,

My name is Eugene Wells and I am the author of “The Decaf Diet: Is Caffeine Making You Fat?” In the book I discuss a number of ways in which caffeine contributes to overeating through its impact on the hormones cortisol and insulin, and also as a result of the additional calories that we put into our caffeinated beverages and foods.

I also discuss how caffeine slows down our metabolisms in the long-term by promoting muscle breakdown and I address the inefficacy of weight loss supplements. I present the reader with two plans for dealing with caffeine’s fattening effects. The first is that of caffeine reduction, and the other is that of optimal caffeine use, through which the reader continues to drink coffee but makes nutritional and lifestyle adjustments in order to blunt caffeine’s fattening effects.

Some of my conclusions are controversial. For example, in my chapter called Optimal Caffeine Use, I conclude that coffee is a better source of caffeine than green and black tea, because green and black tea contain large amounts of fluoride, which are damaging to the body. I advise moderation and avoidance of tea, in opposition to those who promote this beverage.

I just read this post and you are absolutely right. I noticed for myself that is easier for me to quit cold turkey than to gradually wean off of coffee, and in my book I describe both methods and make it clear that people have different levels of success with each. Caffeine is a drug, and it is a natural pesticide, and no one thinks about these things.

I think the information in my book would interest you and your readers, so if you're interested I would love to send you a free review copy that you can post about or review on your site, or just keep for your personal use since you're interested in this topic. Please let me know your mailing address for a hard copy or an e-mail address if you prefer a pdf edition.

I apologize for posting this as a comment but I was not able to get through your "Contact Me" form.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Eugene Wells

Dan, I was fascinated to read the positive side-effects of being caffeine-free! I have done this in the past and like you, suffered terribly for a few days with the withdrawal symptoms you speak about. But this time it was entirely different and I don't know why. Due to being overweight I decided firstly that I would cut out the sugar from tea and coffee and keep with the caffeine to give me that buzz. Well, having done it before (going sugar-free) I didn't find it too hard, which surprised me. Then I decided to go one step further and give up the caffeine too. I switched to redbush (which is caffeine-free but gives a little sweetness - it's an acquired taste, but now I'm hooked). I still have 1 black instant coffee for breakfast but that is it (this is my final step - getting rid of the comfort blanket of a morning fix). I don't know if there is something in the redbush that prevents the withdrawal headaches, but I haven't had any at all this time, thankfully.

I agree with you 100%. I was using to give me energy and ran myself to the ground with it. Two words ...Tim Hortons...very addictive! It was all fine and dandy when I first started drinking it and got all buzzed with energy...so I thought. It wasn't until going through a divorce..a very stressful time where coffee consumption increased I began not feeling well. I've been to Doctors looking for answers to the point that they started to think I was nuts. Diagnosed with post traumatic stress, bi-polar, anxiety....These diagnoses did not sit with me so I kept digging and digging myself and I kept coming up with ADRENAL FATIGUE. I quit cold turkey about 10 days ago and feeling the benefits. As you say here with the better vision, focus and my recall is alot better. I started to feel so stupid there for awhile. Much calmer now these days and looking forward to a full recovery. I've even started doing things again that I used to enjoy like cooking, dancing and laughing. For some reason I lost my sense of humour.

Eat right. Drink 8 glasses of water. Vitamin C and B complex for the adrenals.
Cheers

My coffee consumption is strange really.

When I am working at home I can get by on no coffee and just a cup of tea in the morning and one in the afternoon.

When I am in a clients office for a day I drink coffee like it is going out of fashion, I find having to work constantly for the day with no chill out breaks means I need some stimulation to keep going.

BTW I have been told if you want to decaf your tea, pour a cup as normal, keep the tea bag but tip the water out and then refill it with fresh boiling water. It was something I came across about 10 years ago as a tip in a magazine, so I hope I am not giving out duff information.

All the best Decaf Dan, hope the no coffee works for you!

This is an excellent piece. Sometimes being stuck with something other than our usual tools allows us to explore new ways to work. Keep trying new things.
